Sgt. Maj. Terry L. Anderson Jr. retires, leaving lasting impact on Army finance

WASHINGTON — Sgt. Maj. Terry L. Anderson Jr. is retiring after 27 years of distinguished military service. Since 2023, Anderson has served as the senior enlisted advisor to the military deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Financial Management & Comptroller). In this capacity, he advised senior leadership on the training, readiness, and development of the military financial management profession of the Total Army.

Anderson, a native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, entered the Army in July 1999 as a Finance Specialist. He completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, launching an illustrious career that would span nearly three decades.

Throughout his 27-year career, Anderson served in a series of increasingly demanding leadership positions across the globe, including key assignments as garrison command sergeant major at U.S. Army Garrison Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, senior financial management advisor at the 4th Financial Management Support Unit, Fort Bliss, Texas, and assistant inspector general at XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He also deployed extensively in support of critical operations worldwide, including Operation Joint Guardian, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Having worked alongside Anderson during his tenure as director of the Army budget and as the military deputy, Bennett highlighted Anderson’s profound impact on the force. Bennett noted that Anderson successfully strengthened the professional foundations of the Army finance community due to "his strategic leadership and a steadfast dedication to mentoring the next generation of financial leaders."

Strengthening the Finance and Comptroller Profession

Under Anderson's guidance, the office spearheaded the development and execution of the Financial Management & Comptroller Enlisted Guide, establishing a comprehensive framework that equips Soldiers with the vital knowledge needed to understand their roles, excel, and grow into highly capable finance professionals. This commitment to talent cultivation was further demonstrated by his leadership of the Accounts Payable Mission for Finance, which secured a critical peacetime mission in garrison to maintain operational readiness. Additionally, Anderson founded the Finance Senior Enlisted Integration Committee, uniting senior enlisted leaders across commands to standardize professional processes and implement charter and indoctrination practices focused on emerging requirements, talent management, retention, and strategic messaging.

A Lifetime of Accolades and Education

Anderson's academic and military education is extensive, culminating with the Nominative Leaders Course. He is a graduate of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, the Executive Comptroller Course, the Inspector General Course, and both airborne and air assault schools, and he holds a bachelor's degree in organizational management from the University of Arizona Global Campus.

Throughout his career, Anderson earned prestigious decorations, including the Legion of Merit, with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, with five oak leaf clusters, and the Army Commendation Medal, with five oak leaf clusters.

Signifying his profound impact on his branch, Anderson is a recipient of the prestigious Brig. Gen. Robert C. Goetz Medallion, Maj. Gen. Nathan Townsend Medallion and has been formally recognized as a Distinguished Member of the Finance Regiment.
