VA awards suicide prevention grants to strengthen community support for Veterans
VA-funded suicide prevention grants support community-based programs for Veterans nationwide
When a Veteran in Puerto Rico first connected with the community organization Family Endeavors, isolation had taken hold. Like many Veterans navigating life after service, the sense of belonging that once came from a unit had faded, leaving little in its place.
Today, that same Veteran describes feeling part of a family again.
“I learned I don’t have to face everything alone,” the Veteran said. “Sharing with other Veterans restored my confidence and made me feel part of a family again.”
That transformation is the result of the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program (SSG Fox SPGP). VA has announced its Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27) SSG Fox SPGP awards to community organizations nationwide that are delivering tailored suicide prevention and wellness services for eligible Veterans, service members and their families.
Since its launch in 2022, the SSG Fox SPGP has now invested more than $322 million in community-based programs across the country, helping expand access to services that address factors associated with suicide risk, including social isolation, financial stress and barriers to care. The program prioritizes reaching Veterans in areas of high need who are not currently connected with VA. More than 90% of SSG Fox SPGP participants report improvements in well-being, mental health, social support or financial stability after completing grant-funded services.
A sense of belonging and the practical support found through social connection are powerful protective factors against suicide. Many of the FY27 grant recipients are helping Veterans build those connections through peer support, case management, relationship coaching, faith-based interventions and family or community engagement programs that promote belonging and hope.
Finding community after a move
After relocating to a new community in South Carolina, a Veteran reported feeling disconnected and cut off from the support systems that once kept them grounded. Outside of family responsibilities, there was little connection to lean on. Recognizing that social isolation can be a significant risk factor for emotional distress, Upstate Warrior Solution helped the Veteran by focusing on creating opportunities for meaningful peer engagement.
The Veteran was introduced to the organization’s Outdoor Recreation Program and the “I Got Your 6” Veteran support group, and then connected with fellow Veterans who shared similar experiences and challenges.
The Veteran developed new friendships, became more comfortable seeking help when needed, and had more opportunities to engage in community activities. Program staff observed reduced feelings of isolation, stronger relationships, heightened confidence and an increased sense of belonging.
The outcome demonstrates the vital role peer support can play in suicide prevention. Connection to community and fellow Veterans can help individuals feel understood, valued and supported during challenging times.
Social support as a suicide prevention strategy
The experiences of these Veterans who have been served in different parts of the country by Family Endeavors and Upstate Warrior Solution demonstrate a common theme: social support saves lives.
Whether through peer support groups, social skill building, recreational activities or ongoing case management, SSG Fox SPGP-funded programs create opportunities for Veterans to build trusted relationships and access resources before challenges escalate into crises.
These connections often serve as the foundation for improved mental health, greater stability and a renewed sense of purpose. By helping Veterans strengthen relationships and engage with their communities, FY27 grant recipients are advancing a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention that emphasizes hope, resilience and belonging.
In addition to promoting social connectedness, the SSG Fox SPGP addresses mental health, financial stability and wellbeing through grantee services and linkage to VA and other resources.
The FY27 SSG Fox SPGP awards support for one year of services beginning Sept. 30, 2026, as community organizations continue working alongside VA to ensure Veterans have access to life-saving support where they live.
