GSSM Foundation Announces New Endowed Scholarship Fund

HARTSVILLE, S.C. — The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) Foundation is pleased to announce the creation of the Nitko-Seaman-Huynh Endowed Scholarship Fund, which will help GSSM students pay for meal plans and other essential expenses.

The endowment was made possible by a generous gift from GSSM alum parents Dr. Huynh and Mrs. Sarah P. Seaman-Huynh. The fund honors the enduring friendship between the Seaman-Huynh family and Dr. Anthony J. Nitko and Mrs. Veronica V. Nitko. Tony and Huynh were classmates in graduate school at the University of Iowa while earning their doctoral degrees. Additionally, Sarah and Huynh arranged the adoption of one of the Nitkos’ children, Robert H. Nitko, from a local orphanage in Vietnam when the Seaman-Huynhs lived there as civilians in the early 1970s.

Dr. Huynh and Mrs. Seaman-Huynh are the parents of Sarah Mai Schroeder, a GSSM summer camp alum in the early 1990s. Their daughter-in-law, Sarah Edson Seaman-Huynh, graduated from GSSM’s residential high school in 1994.

This marks the fourth endowed fund the Seaman-Huynhs have created through the GSSM Foundation. All four support residential financial aid, demonstrating the family's enduring commitment to accessible, high-quality STEM education for students who may not otherwise have the financial means to attend GSSM.

"GSSM is fortunate to have a remarkable community of loyal and generous supporters," said GSSM President Danny Dorsel ’90. "The Seaman-Huynh family exemplifies the spirit of giving back. Having benefited from the opportunities GSSM provides, they are helping ensure that future generations of students have access to those same transformative experiences."

Reflecting on their gift, the Seaman-Huynhs expressed hope that the fund will enable future generations of Govies to reach their personal dreams, in their own time and space, with special nuance and a happy smile.

GSSM and the GSSM Foundation express their gratitude to the Seaman-Huynhs for their continued investment in South Carolina education and for supporting future Govies through the establishment of this scholarship.
